HOLDEN – Stephen G. Smith, 73, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family on March 29th, 2021 after a brief, courageous battle with cancer. He was born September 17th, 1947 in Orrington raised by his grandmother, Maria Smith-Hewes. He graduated from Brewer High School class of 1967. Steve worked 35 years at James River paper mill in Old Town until his retirement in 2005. Steve was married to his loving wife, Bethany, for 52 years. After retiring they spent 14 winters in Zephyrhills. In Florida they made many new friends, took road trips, and loved going to concerts at Busch Gardens. They particularly enjoyed camping and had a great cross-country trip in their RV. Steve’s favorite pastime was playing golf, where he made many new friends from all over the US and Canada. He was a scratch golfer, even into his 70’s. He had several hole-in-ones and held the course record of 29 at Pine Hill in Brewer. His second passion was his ’67 Chevelle. He enjoyed car shows and could be seen cruising around the streets of Bangor-Brewer with his windows down and his radio up.Steve was a dedicated family man and very proud of his children and grandchildren; never missing the chance to spend time with his family. He is survived by his wife Bethany and three children: Scott Smith and his wife, Jill; Tracy McLaughlin and her husband, Scott; and Heather Bendure and her husband, Raymond; and seven grandchildren: Andrew, Taylor, Morgan, Cameron, Trevor, Madelyn, and Jessica; and mother-in-law, Charlotte. Family and friends are invited to visit at Brookings-Smith 133 Center St., Bangor from 3 to 4 on Monday, April 5th, immediately followed by a 4pm funeral service at same location. Donations in his memory may be made to Salvation-Army, 65 South Park St. Bangor, ME.04401.

Scott and family, So sad to hear of your Dad's passing. I had a chance to see him a couple years ago at a Hermon football game. His support of Holbrook athletics many years ago will never be forgotten. He was a wonderful man.
