Bangor - Catherine (Kay) Reilly Peckenham died at the age of 102 on July 2, 2020, surrounded by family members at her home in Bangor. She was born on October 27, 1917, in Gardiner, Maine, the daughter of Mattie Belle Eldridge and Maurice L. Reilly.

Catherine graduated from Deering High School in Portland. After earning a degree from Simmons College, she taught at Waterville High School where she volunteered as an Air Post Observer during WWII.

In 1950, she married Thomas F. Peckenham II and moved to Connecticut, where she lived for 25 years before returning to Maine to live in Hope, Head Tide, and Walpole. For 30 years she summered at China Lake and, later, in Owl’s Head. Her children and grandchildren were touched by her enthusiasm, whether swimming in the ocean in her 90s or hiking in the woods.

Catherine was proud of her Irish ancestors who settled in North Whitefield, and her mother’s ancestors who settled in Orrington, Dedham and Surry in the late 1700s. She was an active member of the Esther Eayres Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Catherine loved people and belonged to many clubs and volunteered often. She was known for her beautiful flower gardens. In her late 90s she moved into Boyd Place-Phillips Strickland House, where she had many friends among the staff, residents and aides. In 2020, Catherine moved into her family’s home.

She will be remembered for her positive spirit. She woke every day to blue skies, eager to make new friends and enjoy the sunshine.

Her husband, Thomas F. Peckenham II, and son, Thomas F. Peckenham III, predeceased her. She is survived by her daughters, Nancy Peckenham and her husband, Mark Fleischman, of Bangor, and Mattie Peckenham and her husband, Ricardo Hernandez, of Concord, Ca., and one son, John Peckenham and his wife, Mary O’Shea, of Orland, and a daughter-in-law, Jane Peckenham, of Ossining, New York. She leaves 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

A private funeral Mass will be held at St. Denis Catholic Church in North Whitefield. A live stream will begin at 10:50 a.m., Tuesday, July 7, 2020 at for those wishing to attend the service remotely.

To: Mary, Nancy, and Johnny From : Michael Ames I was very sorry to hear of the passing of your mother. I have very fond memories of the years that we spent summers down to China Lake. I can remember my mother telling us we had to wait until we heard the screen door on your camp porch shut before we could go over to visit or to swim. We all used to play the "diving game" jumping off the end of the wharf. Your family made the lake a wonderful place to enjoy. I was also sad to see that your brother Tom had passed. He and I spent much time together in the boats going all over the lake. My mother passed away in 2013, and dad passed away at 95 this April. I can appreciate what you are going through, but at least we always have our fond memories. I live in Newport now, and do still spend time down at camp. One of my daughters lives in Brewer with her husband and my 9 month old grandson. and they all are very fond of spending time down at the lake. Pam retired from her Law practice July first and lives in Sydney. I hope that all of you are able to navigate this time of heartache and wish you well. Michael Ames

Mrs. Peckenham was a frequent visitor to BookMarc's Bookstore on Harlow Street when she lived on Franklin Street. She was a ray of sunshine, interested in books and people and whatever was on your mind. She bought a small painting of mine. Marc, Victor and I were always happy to see her coming. Such a long life for a lovely lady. Peg Hanson

Dear Peckenham Family, Mattie, John, and Nancy and the spouses and grandchildren and great grandchildren: I am heartbroken to hear of dear Kay's passing; while I had not visited in a couple of years, I recall her 100th birthday celebration and visiting her and developing a lovely friendship while living at Franklin Place Condos and when Kay had the apartment of Boyd House. I have missed her smiling face and the fun we used to have attending plays at Penobscot Theatre and Monmouth Summer Theatre. She was loved by all and will be missed by all too. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with all of you; Jane Deane
