BANGOR – Ralph E. Deane, 90, died peacefully January 29, 2020. He was born December 20, 1929, in Fort Fairfield, the son of Loomis A. and Emma E. (Gotrreau) Deane.

Ralph graduated from Fort Fairfield High School, Class of 1947. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served 20 years and retired. He continued his military service in the U.S. Air National Guard for an additional 11 years, serving his country for a total of 31 years. Ralph had a strong work ethic and wasn’t one to sit idle. After his military career, he pursued his love of carpentry, almost until the day he died. Ralph and his wife, Joan, were longtime members of St. John’s Catholic Church in Bangor. Ralph treasured his summers spent at Lucerne with his family, and winters with his wife in Florida. Ralph’s dry sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, Ralph was predeceased by sisters, Dorothy and Helen. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Joan (Pelletier) Deane; his sons, Mark Deane, Wayne Deane and wife, Bonnie, Stephen Deane and wife, Susan; a daughter, Lisa Springer and husband, Ronald; grandchildren, Mike, Ben, Jessica, Morgan, James, Madison; great-grandchildren, Hunter, Porter, Beckett, Everly; and a sister, Ruth.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 2-4 p.m., Sunday, February 2, 2020, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor. A funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m., Monday February 3, 2020, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John’s Catholic Church, 207 York Street, Bangor. All are welcome to share conversation and refreshments in the parish hall immediately following the Mass, Monday. Private interment will be in Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Ohio Street, Bangor, in the spring. Those wishing to remember Ralph in a special way may make gifts in his memory to Beacon Hospice, 304 Hancock Street, Suite 3A, Bangor, ME 04401. Condolences to the family may be expressed at

I was saddened to hear of Uncle Ralphs passing. I was able to see him shortly at the lake this past July along with my cousins that were there. He made me chuckle right off as he always did, I would banter back and forth and his eyes would gleam. Back when I was around 11 or so he hired me to help paint the neighbors building. I rode my bike from Brewer every morning carrying a radio on the handle bars. The cross grip on the radio broke several times and I kept Duct taping it over and over. He commented one day that If I added one more layer of Duct tape I would have to buy a trailer to hail it around. He had a keen eye always looking for the humor in things. I appreciated him and as I grew older could appreciate his commitment to do the task right. He will be missed.
