Mary Fleming

Mary Ellen Fleming (maiden name: Dunroe), 86, went home to our Lord on Sept. 18, 2020. She passed peacefully at Maine Veterans’ Homes-Bangor, surrounded by her four loving children and the wonderful staff.

You left us not so long ago, your journey met its end.
You left behind your footprints, for your family & your friends.
Your essence forever lingers here, on this earthly plain of ours.
We see it everywhere we turn, in the sunshine & rain showers.
The life you led was courageous, you achieved all they said you couldn’t.
Masters degrees & motherhood alone, giving up was something you wouldn’t.
Years of teaching, guiding & travel, gave you knowledge to pass to us.
When God came to take you home with him, He knew He could count on us.
Rest easy now with your soul mate, knowing your job here on earth is complete.
For one day we’ll meet again our angel, In the land of eternal peace.

Mary was born Mary Ellen Dunroe on June 29, 1934 to William & Mary Francis Dunroe. She grew up in Winterport then Bangor, ME with her 4 siblings Tommy, Terry, Cynthia & Joan. She attended John Bapst High School before moving on to the University of Maine where she earned her Masters in English, Bachelors in Nutrition and Minor in Theatre Arts. Mary married the love of her life, Robert Fleming in 1956 and had 4 children before his sudden death in 1979. She is survived by daughter Susan Fleming-Leeman of Bucksport, granddaughter Christine Delano & husband Sonny with their 2 children Jasmine and Charolette of Orrington; son Jim Fleming & wife Pam of Bucksport, granddaughters Jaylene Thomas with son Wyatt of Bucksport, granddaughter Jenna Ryder and husband Devon with their daughter Keylee of Bucksport, granddaughter Alyssa Fleming with significant other Rico Thomas, their 2 children Kingston & Mackenzie of Bucksport; daughter Karen McSheehy & husband Jim of Galveston, TX, granddaughter Brianna Berdion & husband Lundall with their 3 children Carter, Kinslee & Stetson of Tomball, TX, granddaughter Hilary Kelley & husband Kaleb of Wimberely, TX; son Loius Fleming of Galveston, TX; sister Cynthia Gamage and family of Cumberland Center, Maine; along with many more nieces, nephews and extended family that adored this wonderful woman.

Mary had many accomplishments to be proud of in her amazing life, including being the first recipient of the Eastern Area Agency on Aging George Hale Silver Frame Award. She was a humble servant of God and her community, never trying to gain recognition for helping others in need. She worked tirelessly at many of our local hospitals including Bar Harbor, MCMH & EMMC as a registered dietician before retiring. She was also the proud owner of her very own gourmet shop “The Cheese Man”, that sat on main st. in Ellsworth for many years, where she gained so many loving friendships.

Mary donated as much time as possible to assisting the food pantry at her local churches, helping the homeless in any way possible, paying out of pocket for insulin to give to those who couldn’t afford it & many other accomplishments she would shy away from telling. Mary was also part of the Bangor Area Genealogical Society, tracing her ancestry (as well as others) an taking a trip back to her homeland of Ireland, where her experiences could fill a novel.

Mary was pre-deceased by her parents William & Mary Francis, brothers Tommy & Terry, sister Joan, soul mate & husband Robert Fleming & loving son-in-law Brian Leeman, whom she thought the world of.

A Funeral Mass will be held 11 am. Tuesday, September 29, 2020 at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Ohio St., Bangor, followed by the Rite of Committal at Mt. Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Bangor.

All donations in Mary’s name can be made to Diabetes, Endocrine and Nutrition Center 905 Union St. #11, Bangor, ME.

I just heard of Mary's passing. I am a Dietitian who knew Mary for many years. We would always see each other at the meetings and she covered me when I was out ill at my previous place of employment. She always had a smile, a good word for others and she will be missed. Marion McLellan
