Obituary

BREWER and BANGOR - Charles C. Campbell, 89, husband of Eleanor (Coney) Campbell, died peacefully February 8, 2019 at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Bangor. He was born in Houlton, Maine on September 25, 1929, the son of Henry L. (Fitzgerald) Campbell and Elizabeth H. (Lawler-Murphy) Campbell. Charles joined the Maine State Guard in April of 1945, when he was 15 years old. He served four years in the United States Naval Reserve, before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. In the Marine Corps, Charles was a member of the First Marine Division and fought in the Korean War. Following his service, Charles married his childhood sweetheart, Eleanor Rose Coney. Charles worked as a rural mail carrier for over 25 years in Bangor and Brewer with the United States Postal Service. Always a hard worker, Charles was also self-employed in the real estate and apartment business and sold mobile homes for many years at Bangor Mobile Homes. Charles was a devoted and beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He loved the Maine woods and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Charles enjoyed spending time with his family at his camp on Phillips Lake. He will be greatly missed by his loving family. Charles leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Eleanor Coney Campbell; his son, Honorable Gregory A. Campbell and wife, Margaret Towle Campbell, Esq. of Hampden; their three children, Katherine M. Campbell, Esq., Gregory C. Campbell, and William F. Campbell; daughter, Marie B. Carolan and husband, Richard E. Carolan of Wellesley, MA; their three children, Kristin Carolan Kaplan and husband, Brian Kaplan and their children, Hayden, Carys, and River; Richard Carolan Jr. and wife, Kathleen Carolan; and Aileen Carolan. Charles is also survived by his brother, Norman G. Campbell and wife, Sondra Campbell, of Brewer. Charles was pre-deceased by his parents, Henry and Elizabeth Campbell; brother, Patrick H. Campbell, Sr.; sister, Marie L. McDonough, his very special niece, Alison McDonough Martin, as well as other treasured nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Charles’ family would like to thank all of the professionals at Beacon Hospice and at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor for their care, and especially the thoughtful and kind staff of B Unit. Family and friends are welcome to call 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 14, 2019 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor. A Funeral Mass will be held 2pm Friday, February 15, 2019 at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 531 North Main Street, Brewer. A reception at the church will follow immediately after the mass. A private Rite of Committal with military honors will be held at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery in the spring. Those who wish to remember Charles in a special way may make gifts in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter, 383 US Route One, Suite 2C, Scarborough, ME 04074. To the family of Charlie Campbell: Please accept my condolences on your loss. As Charlie's Beacon Hospice volunteer, I looked forward to the meetings that I had with him prior to his passing, during which I was taken with his enthusiastic attitude, pleasant manner, and love of conversation. I'm sad that I won't have an opportunity to deepen a friendship that I could sense emerging. I think that we would have enjoyed chatting about the many interests that we shared. Thank you for allowing me to get acquainted with Charlie and briefly with Eleanor, Greg, and other family members during my last visit with him. Dave Witham Bangor

My sister had just passed away and I wasn’t doing very well and not wanting to bother my father, my babysitter called my “Uncle Charlie”. My father didn’t have any brothers and Charlie was as close to a brother as he could have ever had. He came immediately and took me to the driving range/batting cages in Bangor. We sat on a bench and he just held my hand. It may not seem like a lot to some, but to a 10 year old, he was my hero and it was everything to me at that moment. He will always have a special place in my heart. May you rest in peace surrounded by God’s love. Thinking of the Campbell family and sending prayers at this difficult time. Katerina Belvin
