Obituary

Kenduskeag and Stockton Springs - Arthur W. Smith, 99, formerly of Bangor, died, December 25, 2018 at Orono Commons. He was born July 17, 1919, in Castor, Alberta, Canada, the son of Albert D. and Clara B. (Belyea) Smith.

Arthur moved to Bangor when he was nine years old from Woodstock, New Brunswick, Canada. In 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army where he was trained in the art of cooking. The war took Arthur to Africa and Italy where they processed and transported prisoners of war. His unit also saw action in France and Germany.

Arthur began cooking at Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity at the University of Maine, Orono where he worked for 35 years until his retirement. He also worked at Camp Roosevelt in Eddington and the Hartford County 4-H Camp in Marlborough, CT during the summers.

After retirement, Arthur enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He also found pleasure in baking homemade rolls and doughnuts. He offered these treats to every visitor who came to his home. Arthur was a strong willed, hardworking man who would always offer his friendship to strangers. He will be remembered for his playful sense of humor.

In addition to his parents, Arthur was predeceased by his loving wife of 59 years, Phyllis Howland Smith; two brothers, and four sisters.

He is survived by two sons, Donald A. Smith and his wife, Kathy, of Stockton Springs, and James A. Smith and his wife, Diane, of Kenduskeag; four grandchildren, Christopher Smith, Andrew Smith, Benjamin Smith, and Alison Montgomery; the joy of his life five great grandchildren, Ella, Brady, and Caden Smith, Frank and Owen Montgomery. He had a special space in his heart for his favorite nieces, Luella Lingamfelter of Weatherford, TX, and Billie Lovato of Los Lunas, NM, and grandniece, Jessica Morning of Albuquerque, NM.

The family would like to thank Dr. Vincent Michaud for the care and compassion shown to Arthur over the years.

A private graveside service will be held in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Bangor, later in the spring. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com

Please accept my sincere condolences. Arthur was a good man who provided a home for his wife’s three orphaned brothers. To me he was a kind caring brother in law. He was a hard working man who loved his family.
