Alton Raymond Grant passed away on October 30, 2018 at 91 years old.
Alton Raymond Grant born in Calais, Maine on April 20, 1927. Son of Hollis A. Grant and Elsie Preston Grant. Graduated from Calais Academy in June 1944. He was awarded a New England Conservatory of Music scholarship to pursue a degree in music which he loved.
Al was a World War II veteran. He served with Lco, 3rd bat. 4th Mar, 6th Mar. div. during the battle of Okinawa. Al was proud to be a member of the Tokyo Bay Occupation Force (TF-31), which participated in the initial landing and occupation of the Tokyo Bay area and the capture of HIJMS Nagato. This act symbolized the unconditional and complete surrender of the Japanese Navy of 30 August, 1945. He was with the 4th Marines that helped free the 4th Marines captured during the first of the war.
Al was a life member of the VFW, American Legion, Old Town, DAV 6th Marine Division Association. Charter member of the Bangor Detachment #1151 Marine Corps League. Member of the Military Order of the Devil Dogs with the rank of PDD. Associate member of the United States Marine Raider Association. He served as Commandant Department of Maine of the Marine Corps League. He was Aide-De-Camp to the staff of the Governor from 31 January 2009 to 31 January 2010. He was also a thirty plus year member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and a member of the National Rifle Association.
Al and his wife, Pat spent nine winters in Stillwater Oklahoma and made many friends there. Later, Al worked for Merrill Blueberry Freezer in Hancock. He enjoyed the time there and cared very much for the Merrill family and friend John Jordan.
Al spent several years at Coles Museum being interviewed by school children. It was one of the most rewarding times of his life.
He was predeceased by his parents Hollis and Elsie Grant, wife Patricia Grant, brother Richard Grant, and Nephew Wayne H. Grant. He is survived by his son Alan Grant. Son Gary Grant and wife Cindy and daughter Lisa Watson, his grandchildren Alana Boisvert and husband Ben, Kristopher Grant, and Gary Scott Grant Jr his wife, and two great grandchildren and special friend Rose Corriveau.
Graveside services with military honors provided by the Marine Corps League detachment 1151, will be held 1 pm. Saturday November 17, 2018 at the Calais Cemetery, South St., Calais.
