Obituary for Gertrude Louise Carroll (Frankland)

Gertrude Louise Carroll (Frankland)
BANGOR & WHITE HEAD ISLAND, NB - Many times through the years, our mother has said, “I can only imagine closing my eyes in this life, and opening them in Heaven to be looking into the face of my blessed Savior.” On March 28, 2018, Gertrude Carroll, 91, stopped imagining as she stepped through the portals of Heaven and met her Savior face-to-face. She was the beloved daughter of Floyd and Violet (Cheney) Frankland, born to them on July 19, 1926, in Calais, ME. She was raised on White Head Island, New Brunswick (NB), Canada. Our mother adored her parents, but sadly when she was 16 years old, Violet passed away. Sometime later, her father married Odille Comeau, from Nova Scotia and “Grammie Dill” was the wonderful grandmother we knew and loved. After Gertrude finished school on the island, she went to Holy Rosary Business School in St. Stephen, NB and graduated in June, 1945. She married the love of her life, Dolph “Dot” Carroll on December 4, 1945 (his birthday). They lived on White Head and raised three daughters while she worked as a hair dresser in our home. She was a faithful member of White Head Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. She lost her husband, our dad, in June, 1967, and in 1968 she moved to Victoria Corner, NB, to become the head cook at the New Brunswick Bible Institute. She served there for 13 years then moved to Bangor, ME to be closer to family where she looked after “older” people in their homes, which she did until she was 84 years old. Though she was unable to attend church for the past several years, she was a member of Hermon Baptist Church. She was predeceased by her parents, her step-mother, her husband, five brothers, one sister, four sisters-in-law, and two brothers-in-law; Jared and Muriel Frankland, Carmen and Muriel Frankland, Audrey and Zellie Frankland, Alvin Frankland and Edgar Frankland; sister, Ella Ossinger and Mabury; Lester Carroll and wife, Beth (who she loved like a sister). She was also predeceased by two beloved sons-in-law, Stephen Weymouth and Charles Rogers; two very special life-long family friends, Kathleen Zwicker Tate and Myrtle Zwicker Smith. She is survived by her daughters, Cheryl Carroll-Rogers of Winterport, ME, Sandra Dow of Bangor, ME, and Judy Weymouth of Bangor, ME; grandchildren, Thomas Dow and wife, Kim of Brewer, ME, Amy Dow of Brewer, ME, Walter Dow and wife, Kelly of Hermon, ME, Tyler Weymouth and wife, Laura of Akron, NY, Caroline Weymouth of Bangor, ME; great-grandchildren, Landon and Aubree Dow of Hermon, ME and Margaret “Maggie” and Rosalie “Rosie” Weymouth of Akron, NY. Also, one sister-in-law, Kathleen “Kay” (Alvin) Frankland of Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia, Canada; special family friend, Janine Gmitter of Brewer, ME, and many much-loved nieces and nephews. Our beloved mother and grandmother has lived her life loving and serving her Lord and her family. She has spent countless hours reading and studying her Bible and praying for many, especially her family. C.S. Lewis once said, “We don’t have a soul. We are a soul. We happen to have a body.” Our mother has now shed her feeble and frail body and stepped into God’s presence; not because she was a loving and kind person, but because as a young girl, she recognized herself as a sinner, accepted Christ’s forgiveness and payment for her sins through His death on the cross, placing her faith and trust in Him, then lived her life seeking to live for Him. As you read this obituary, we beg of you, please do not live your life of 20, 40, or 91 years and fail to find Him. “Seek ye the LORD while He may be found, call on Him while He is near” Isaiah 55:6. For our mother, we quote this verse for her: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day – and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for His appearing.” II Timothy 4:7 & 8. Our family would like to thank Dr. Kerry Riker and Joanne Riker at St. Joseph Internal Medicine for their years of care for our mother, especially these past seven months. Also, the staff at St. Joseph Hospital, their visiting nurses and rehab staff, the staff at Stillwater Healthcare, and Beacon Hospice. Words cannot express how much we appreciate each of you; you should be proud of the way you conduct yourself in your chosen profession. Special thanks to Carol Chute who lovingly helped us care for our mum like she was her own. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 2-4 p.m., Saturday, March 31, 2018, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor, with Pastor Garnett Chute sharing prayers at 3 p.m. Interment will be next to her husband in White Head Island Cemetery, NB, Canada, in the spring. Those who wish to remember Gertrude in a special way may make gifts in her memory to the Child Evangelism Fellowship of Central Maine, P.O. Box 132, Carmel, Me 04419-0132 or White Head Island Cemetery Fund, c/o White Head Baptist Church, 443 White Head Road, White Head Island, New Brunswick, Canada E5G 2K1.
