Bernice Curtis (Hinkley)
CARMEL – Bernice E. “Bunny” (Hinkley) Curtis, 100, Carmel’s oldest resident, passed away February 20, 2018, at a Bangor hospital. She was born August 24, 1917, in Alton, the daughter of William and Amy (Malbon) Hinkley.
Bunny graduated from Old Town High School, Class of 1935, and Eastern State Normal School in Castine, Class of 1938. She taught at Stetson and was a substitute teacher for many years for M.S.A.D. #23 in Carmel. Bunny was a life member and past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Millwee #198 of Orrington, a member of the Harvest Grange of Carmel, and the Carmel Senior Citizens Group. She was also a member of Carmel Union Congregational Church and South Levant Baptist Church. Bunny got great enjoyment playing the organ and piano for over 60 years for church, Eastern Star, and the grange. Her and her husband’s favorite pastime was Bingo. She also enjoyed baking, especially custard pies, quilting, and crocheting prize winning doilies. Bunny was fortunate to live in her home of 60 years until she was 95, while still able to drive her car.
In addition to her parents, Bunny was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Henry E. Curtis; brothers, Raymond and Wallace Hinkley; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Delaney. Surviving are a son, Dean Curtis and wife, Mary-Alice; a daughter, Gloria Loud; grandchildren, Tiffany Palmer and husband, Chris, Cherie-Lynn Bishop and husband, Julian, Michael Loud and wife, Ana, and Andrew Loud; great-grandchildren, Aiden and Emma Palmer, and Fabri Alberdi; and nieces and nephews, Harvey, Robert, Judy, Wayne, Marlene, and Richard.
Bunny’s family and friends were so happy to celebrate Bunny’s 100th birthday in August, 2017. We will miss you, Bunny!
A memorial reception to celebrate Bunny’s life will be held 3-5 p.m., Saturday, April 14, 2018, at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 45 Western Avenue, Hampden, where an Eastern Star memorial service will be conducted at 4:30 p.m. by the officers and members of Millwee Chapter #198, OES, of Orrington. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery, Carmel, in the spring.
